From Invisible to AI-Recommended: An Urgent Care Vet Case Study

A Texas urgent care clinic with 1,500+ reviews was invisible to AI search. Within two weeks, ChatGPT and Perplexity were recommending them by name.

The Clinic

This urgent care veterinary clinic operates in a mid-size Texas metro. They are open seven days a week, offer $65 exam fees, and have built up more than 1,500 Google reviews with a 4.6-star average. By any traditional measure, they were doing well. Pet owners in the area knew them. Google Maps showed them in the top three for most local searches.

But when we ran their AI discoverability check, the picture changed completely. Their AI visibility score was 8 out of 100. When we tested their name and services across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, not a single AI tool mentioned or recommended them. They were invisible to the fastest-growing search channel in veterinary medicine.

The Problem

AI search tools do not work the same way Google does. Google reads your website, checks your backlinks, and looks at your reviews. AI tools need structured data -- schema markup, machine-readable service descriptions, and explicit signals that tell them what your business does, where it is, and who it serves.

This clinic had none of that. Their website was built on a template platform with no schema markup at all. Their service descriptions were vague. There was no llms.txt file telling AI crawlers how to interpret the site. There were no AI crawler directives in their robots.txt. The schema score was 15 out of 100 -- just a basic LocalBusiness snippet auto-generated by their website platform.

In simple terms: Google could figure out what they do. AI could not.

What We Did

The entire implementation took six hours spread across two days. Here is exactly what we changed:

Schema overhaul. We replaced the generic LocalBusiness schema with a layered implementation -- VeterinaryCare, EmergencyService, MedicalOrganization, and LocalBusiness all nested properly. Every service the clinic offers got its own schema entry with pricing, availability, and description. We added FAQ schema, review schema, and opening hours structured data.

llms.txt implementation. We created a comprehensive llms.txt file at the site root. This file tells AI crawlers exactly what the clinic does, what services they offer, their hours, their pricing, and their service area. Think of it as a structured briefing document for AI tools.

AI crawler directives. We updated the robots.txt and meta tags to explicitly allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) to access and index the site content.

Service page restructuring. We rewrote the main service pages with clear, factual descriptions that AI tools can parse and cite. No marketing fluff -- just direct answers to the questions pet owners ask AI about urgent vet care.

The Results

Twelve days after implementation, the clinic appeared in a ChatGPT recommendation for "best urgent care vet in [their city]." Within the same week, Perplexity began citing them in responses about emergency vet options in the area.

The schema score went from 15 to 92. AI discoverability jumped from 8 to 78. The clinic went from zero AI mentions to consistent recommendations across multiple AI platforms -- all in under two weeks.

This is the opportunity most vet clinics are missing right now. AI search is growing fast. Pet owners are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity where to take their sick dog tonight. If your clinic is not structured for AI, you are not in those answers. And your competitors who get there first will be hard to displace.

Why This Matters for Your Clinic

AI search is not coming. It is here. The clinics that structure their online presence for AI discoverability now will own the recommendations when this channel becomes as important as Google Maps. The implementation is straightforward and the timeline is fast. Six hours of work produced measurable AI visibility in under two weeks.
